Enjoy these little moments.
It’s easter.
I’m in Costa Rica, a long way from hot cross buns, easter egg hunts and that feeling of maladaiscal joy in Australia that we manage to get such a long break so soon after summer. I miss it all.
I unashamedly love these little annual holidays. Christmas. Easter. Thanksgiving. I enthusiastically cook the dishes. Set the table. Try to bring people together.
This started when I was 18, when my first Christmas as an adult was spent in the Persian Gulf with the military, and I was pining for home.
“I cut the ship’s cake with the Captain on Christmas Day, fulfilling tradition as the youngest member of the crew. As we posed for a photo, the alarm sounded for the boarding team to move out on yet another mission, cutting our conversation short. “Merry Christmas,” he’d said with what looked like an apologetic smile as I’d excused myself.”
As a traveller, I’ve been away from family for so many of these days, which just makes them all the sweeter when I do get to experience them.
So this easter, if you live in a place and a family where easter is celebrated, maybe this is an invitation to enjoy it, unashamedly, perhaps a little more than you ever have. Have an extra hot cross bun and maybe fill it with a thick slice of cold butter, like everyone seems to be doing this year. Buy a few extra eggs for the kids to find during their hunt (as expensive as they are). When a moment of boredom arrives across the four days, lean into it, and head out for a walk, or bake something, or bring out a puzzle. These are all precious moments in life, perhaps some of the most. Enjoy them.

Nice, thanks for sharing!
