Kaitlin and I walked along the beach, our boys up ahead scouring for shells.
'So if we are going to do this,' I started, 'and travel around the world for a year, when’s the best time?'
She thought about it momentarily, cast aside just a few of the many shells she was carrying for Finn, and responded confidently. ‘2026. Atlas would start school a year later, and we'd teach Finn on the road.' I love this woman.
Later that afternoon, we opened a bottle of wine and started playing with a rough itinerary. We asked our friends Michael and Courtney for the lessons they'd picked up when they took their own year-long odyssey as a family.
And for the next two weeks, it was an idea worm we couldn't get out of our heads. We went to the library and checked out twenty Lonely Planet Guides (yes, they still print them). Our route around the world changed daily. We even did a little trial pack of what clothes we'd bring.
Then we committed and locked it in by booking a one-way flight to Uruguay, leaving Christmas Eve this year. Then we booked a non-refundable Airbnb for a month in Jose Ignacio.
In the month or so since I've had some nights where doubts have crept into my head. Doubts that may have been strong enough to see me lean back from the idea.
But those one-way flights were non-refundable. We are committed now. It's happening. And we'll figure it all out as we go. Like we have with everything other brave decision we've ever made, and pinching ourselves about how lucky we are to make choices like this.
What's the brave commitment you want to make this month? Is it asking that certain someone out on a date? Or booking that meeting with your boss? Or maybe it's time to book a one one way flight somewhere ;)
